Stories for the wee . . . every Monday at 10:30 AM . . . guaranteed NOT to put you to sleep! Babies through preschoolers welcome! (oh, parents too).
Just in case you needed any convincing that Franny is the best, Tail Time is awesome, or that kids love books, take a look at this card Franny received today from one of her admirers.
Tail Time is often busy, so if you are with a large group, please call us to schedule a time just for you. You will get a brief tour of the store and your very own story time! We ask that you do not come during Tail Time, for our sanity and yours! Does your anklebiter keep begging you to read a book from a past Tail Time? You're in luck: below are the books that our very own Franny the Magnificent has read at recent Tail Times. Snip Snap!: What's That? (Hardcover)$16.99 ISBN-13: 9780060777548Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days Published: Greenwillow Books, 04/01/2005 Franny celebrated the one year anniversary of overcoming herpetophobia on 8/30/10. In honor of this accomplishment, she read this appropriate book.
PreS-Gr. 2. In this offbeat fantasy, an alligator makes his way down the street, through the front door, up the stairs, and into an apartment where three children flee from his gaping jaws. Finally, when they have endured the threat--or perhaps enjoyed the thrill--long enough, they turn the tables by yelling at the beast, who runs away. Using elements of rhythm and rhyme as well as an enjoyably predictable question-and-answer refrain, the text maintains a playful tone beneath the scary details such as alligator eyes flashing and teeth gnashing. Expressive line drawings, brightened with watercolor washes, illustrate the story with wit and style. Not for every preschooler, perhaps, but good fun for some, especially those who fantasize that they really could whip an alligator and those who realize that their home will never be invaded by a giant reptile. The final scene, in which the beast escapes into a manhole, might keep the alligators-in-the-sewer urban legend alive for another generation. -Booklist Ducks Don't Wear Socks (Hardcover)$15.99 ISBN-13: 9780670061365Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days Published: Viking Juvenile, 05/01/2008 If Franny were a rich girl, ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubba deedle deedle dum, All day long she'd read this book (just as she did on 8/30/10).
Starred Review. PreSchool-Grade 2—A serious girl learns to loosen up
after meeting a dapper duck with a wacky wardrobe and a penchant for
delivering deadpan retorts. She first sees him wearing socks, and then
a tie, a cowboy hat, and the always-giggle-generating underwear. The
seemingly coincidental meetings follow a pattern that children will
appreciate. When straitlaced Emily questions Duck's attire, he is
always ready with a succinct (and silly) reply that requires him to
continue on his merry way. As the story progresses, his outfits and
reasons become more outlandish, causing Emily to lighten up and
ultimately find a way to make Duck himself laugh in return. Duck's
retorts appear in bold font and encourage readers to build on their
expression. White's colorful illustrations bring the story's humor to
life. The cartoon style allows the creature's wackiness to shine while
providing visual clues for those just beginning to read independently.
A lighthearted lesson on the benefits of laughter, this is just plain
fun. Duck will fly off the shelves with the same speed as Mo Willems's
Pigeon.

Pearl Barley and Charlie Parsley (Hardcover)$16.95 ISBN-13: 9781590785966Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days Published: Front Street, 09/01/2008 Franny's birthday is still months away, but already she knows what her wish will be when she blows out the candles on her cake. You can bet that it has something to do with this book, which she read on 8/30/10.
Kindergarten-Grade 1—A simple tale of friendship between two children who are as different as night and day. Where Pearl is loud and boisterous, Charlie is quiet and thoughtful. When Pearl forgets her mittens on a cold day, Charlie helps to keep her hands warm. Conversely, when Charlie is feeling down, Pearl cheers him up. Clearly the audience can see that these children admire the opposing personality traits that they find in one another. Blabey's painterly illustrations, rendered in acrylics and mixed media on board, allow readers to see the texture of the canvas in the characters' faces, clothes, and even in the scenery. The sometimes curving text adds levity to Pearl's exuberant moments. Use this offering as a supplement for friendship-themed storytimes. -School Library Journal $16.99 ISBN-13: 9780060245863Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days Published: HarperCollins, 06/01/1985 When this book was first published, Franny couldn't believe her good fortune. She had been wondering what would result should she give a mouse a baked good for years. She reminds herself every once in a while by reading this book, as she did on 8/30/10.
If a hungry little traveler shows up at your house, you might want to give him a cookie. If you give him a cookie, he's going to ask for a glass of milk. He'll want to look in a mirror to make sure he doesn't have a milk mustache, and then he'll ask for a pair of scissors to give himself a trim.... The consequences of giving a cookie to this energetic mouse run the young host ragged, but young readers will come away smiling at the antics that tumble like dominoes through the pages of this delightful picture book.
1986–87 Alabama Young Readers' Choice Award, K–1 Who Said Coo? (Hardcover)$16.99 ISBN-13: 9781416985105Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days Published: Beach Lane Books, 06/01/2010
Franny has been wanting to read this book at Tail Time for months, but has always been thwarted in her efforts by her nemesis. She finally made it happen, through sheer determination and force of will, on 8/30/10.
This lullaby, filled with warm bedtime scenes, will appeal to young preschoolers for the surprising sounds as well as the sleepy comfort it offers. In the mischievous story, written in sweet rhymes, Lulu the pig snuggles into bed in her room, “cozy and quiet / just the way she liked it,” but she is awakened by a sound of someone crying, “Cooooo.” She asks Pigeon, “Who said coo? / Was it you?” But Pigeon does not answer. Lulu heads back to bed, but just when everything is cozy and quiet once again, “somebody somewhere” says “Moooooo.” The pictures show Lulu fuming as she chases away two noisy birds that are causing the ruckus. At last she can sleep, until she hears “Boo-hoo,” and she races outside to apologize: she should have said “shhhh” not “shoo.” Together, the animals all snuggle in Lulu's bed together––until somebody yells, “Cock-a doodle doo!” Even when kids know what is coming, they will love going back to the contrasting scenes of comic anger and snuggling bliss. Preschool. -Booklist Smile a Lot! (Hardcover)$15.95 ISBN-13: 9780876148693Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days Published: Carolrhoda Books, 01/01/2002
Franny reads this book every morning right after she wakes up. On 8/23/10, she decided to share the secret to her winning attitude, happy spirit, and general happiness with the world.
A grinning green frog stars in Carlson's (the Harriet and George series) encouraging lesson about the power of positive thinking: "Life has all sorts of ups and downs./ That's why you should always smile a lot!" In Carlson's signature style, a framed panel introduces the pajama-clad amphibian against a busy orange and yellow backdrop; opposite, the titular advice ("Smile a Lot!") and a persuasive argument ("It's much easier than complaining") introduces an example in action. For instance, in the first of a trio of framed panels, he sticks out his tongue when his mother serves him "oatmeal with prunes." His grimace turns into a Cheshire cat-like grin ("Smile a Lot!") as he imagines other culinary options ("Ask if you can help her make chocolate chip pancakes tomorrow./ Then figure out what to do with your oatmeal"). The last panel shows the frog spoon-feeding a younger sibling. The format repeats throughout as the frog faces bullies on the playground, a low score on a spelling test and a grueling soccer practice. In each situation Carlson goes beyond "grin and bear it" to give readers a glimpse of karmic justice: in exchange for his upbeat attitude, the frog is justly rewarded. Ages 3-8. –Publishers Weekly The Doghouse (Hardcover)$12.95 ISBN-13: 9780152065331Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days Published: Harcourt Children's Books, 09/01/2008 Franny would have been in the doghouse if she hadn't read this book on 8/23/10. She knows why.
PreSchool-K—The barnyard animals are playing with a red ball that accidentally rolls into the doghouse. Who's going to get it out? Mouse says Cow is big, brave, and strong, and must go first. Cow goes in but does not come out. Pig tries next, as Mouse deems him smart, wise, and stinky. Pig takes offense at the "stinky" designation, but proceeds into the doghouse. Pig does not return either. Duck, as the loudest, goes next—and disappears just like the others. The only one left outside, Mouse timidly calls out, "Can't you come out, Duck?"—upon which Dog appears in the doorway and says, "No! Because I am having duck for dinner." Mouse assumes the worst, but the last spread shows all the animals inside the dog's house sitting down to a meal. Mouse joins the party on the endpapers, just in time for dessert. The simple cartoon characters, scenery, and dialogue balloons are outlined in thick, bold lines. Colors are smooth and flat, with backgrounds done in bright blues, purple, and lime green. The pictures are large and distinct, and will work well with a group. The joke is an old one, but it's always new to kids just beginning to understand wordplay. -School Library Journal I Don't Want a Cool Cat! (Hardcover)$15.99 ISBN-13: 9780316036740Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days Published: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, 08/01/2010 Franny thinks of herself as a cool cat. Is she one? Only those who came and saw her read this book on 8/23/10 know the whole truth.
*Starred Review* When it comes to cats, the little girl with a Buster Brown haircut knows what she does not want: “A stuffy cat. A huffy, over-fluffy cat.” Nor a greedy please-feed-me cat, and certainly not a cool cat. One look at the disdainful Siamese in the illustration, and you know just what the girl means. There's the thinnest layer of actual story here, but the true-to-life hilarity of the text commands attention, especially when mixed with such smart art. With a combination of paint and collage, the images have a three-dimensional feel as they sit on their smooth, candy-colored backgrounds. The girl and her potential felines are drawn using simple shapes, but the bold spreads, with their big images and play on perspective, are truly dramatic. Combine the art with the pithy text, and you've got a book that's perfect to read aloud to groups. Not that individuals won't like it, too. Who can resist the kitten, the “glad-when-I-come-home cat” that finally wins the day? Preschool-Grade 1. -Booklist Chickens to the Rescue (Hardcover)$16.95 ISBN-13: 9780805079517Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days Published: Henry Holt and Co. (BYR), 10/01/2006 This book called out to Franny on 8/23/10. She had no choice but to read it.
Starred Review. PreSchool-Grade 2–At the Greenstalk Farm, it's
no problem if the sheep get lost, the farmer drops his watch down the
well, the dog eats young Jeffrey's book report, the cow gets stuck in a
tree, the duck steals the truck, or Mrs. Greenstalk is too tired to
cook. It's Chickens to the rescue! Unless it's Sunday when they get
some hard-earned rest and the pigs step in to help out. This rollicking
story, made up of simple statements in a specific pattern, follows the
fowls' heroics Monday through Sunday. The simplicity of the text allows
the sheer brilliance of the colored-pencil and watercolor illustrations
to shine through. The details in each rescue scene will have everyone
laughing and noting the expressions of the animals, their crazy but
appropriate outfits, and their amazing abilities. Pair this hilarious
story with Doreen Cronin's Click, Clack, Moo (S & S, 2000) and David Shannon's Duck on a Bike (Scholastic, 2002) for a lively storytime about extraordinary farm animals. -School Library Journal The Princess and Her Panther (Hardcover)$16.99 ISBN-13: 9781416997801Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days Published: Beach Lane Books, 07/01/2010 When Franny was a wee girl, she dreamed of one day reading a book like this one. She trained and meditated everyday, and on 8/23/10, her dream became a reality.
Kindergarten-Grade 2 Imagination is at the heart of this book as two sisters set out to camp in their backyard. Their red tent becomes a royal shelter, the wading pool a lake, and the sandbox is the desert they toil across. The princess is stalwart, but her little sister, the panther, is unnerved when night falls. Orr's steady refrain is, The princess was brave, and the panther tried to be, and the timidity of the panther is purposefully revealed in the rich acrylic illustrations. After one too many scares by neighborhood animals, the girls do not predictably retreat into the safety of the house but, instead, stand up to the night and are brave both of them. The final spread shows that all is well in the tent, with a bright moon shining and the sisters contentedly asleep. This is a clever twist on the usual camping story and the fears that accompany it, and it pairs well with Margaret Ruurs's nonfiction When We Go Camping (Tundra) and Kristine O'Connell George's Toasting Marshmallows: Camping Poems (Clarion, both 2001). -School Library Journal My Father the Dog (Paperback)$6.99 ISBN-13: 9780763630775Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days Published: Candlewick, 04/01/2008
This book read Franny on 8/16/10. Hang on, it's the other way around.
PreS-Gr. 2. A young girl, convinced that her father really is a dog,
shares her observations of the similarities between her father and the
family pet. In a playful text she describes actions common to both,
such as starting the day with a good scratch; clearing the room with a
single "toot" (and trying to look innocent); using a tree for a quick
"pit stop"; and, at the end, displaying loyalty to the "best family in
the world." The illustrations accentuate the humor, especially in the
physical similarities between Dad and the dog. The charm of the
characters, particularly the dad and the pooch, is perfectly conveyed
in the exaggerated figures, which are rounded and elongated, and, like
the backgrounds, painted in blocks of color, subtly textured with
cross-hatching. Children will appreciate the comic view of a dad in an
ordinary, but cozy family.

PreSchool-Grade 1–In this action-filled romp, Tinka and the boy who loves her journey from home to the beach to the fair and home again. Being reprimanded for candy snatching, running away, playing Frisbee, and giving some lovin' are just a few of the activities that fill the pup's busy day. Her adventures are described in a repetitive and effective singsong text that is catchy and enjoyable to read. She's "A Hey! dog,/a sprayed dog,/a skunk-got-in-the-way dog./...A care dog,/a share dog,/a when-I-need-her-there dog." The text and the painterly, cartoon illustrations work together beautifully. The story is brought to life through a mix of full- and partial-page spreads that use bold acrylics in bright and warm tones, and the different perspectives give readers the feeling of being part of the action. Tinka is a fun-to-read-about dog, and this book would enrich any storytime. -School Library Journal
"A warm and cozy tale of sisterly joy and sweet imagination."
